Domestic and sexual violence are serious problems that devastate families and communities. Every day, countless Minnesotans suffer at the hands of their abusers and reach out for help. Last year, in Anoka County, law enforcement responded to 13,668 domestic calls. For each victim who receives the help they need, there are hundreds more who don’t. Alexandra House simply does not have the financial resources to help everyone in need. In 2018, we were consistently overcapacity in our shelter, averaging 103% occupancy for the year. This was an increase of 7% from 2017. Additionally, individuals are staying in our shelter longer with the length of stay increasing from 19 days to over 24 days. Alexandra House is struggling to serve more people with fewer resources as we have experienced a decrease in funding.
Across all of our programs, Alexandra House impacted the lives of nearly 15,000 people in 2018. For example: we provided 12,972 nights of safety to over 542 victims/survivors and their children (268 adults and 272 children/youth). Our advocates worked one-on-one with 1,126 youth through local schools and summer programming activities, and reached over 3,122 students and teachers in six school districts in Anoka County. We responded to over 282 victims (148 sexual assault and 134 domestic abuse victims) who received crisis intervention, safety planning, and support at local hospitals and clinic. This is only a snapshot of the multiple services we offer …AND, the demand for our services continues to grow.
We are able to provide our services free-of-charge because of the support we receive from our community. Your support today will help survivors of domestic and sexual violence live safer, happier lives.
