Description

PG30 is holding our 3rd Annual Nicholas Phillips Memorial Hockey Tournament to honor a lost loved one and support the mission of PG30. The tournament supports our mission of establishing a mental wellness community for athletes and their families. Personal Guidance 30 (PG30) is a supportive Nonprofit organization formed in southern Virginia by a family and teammates impacted by loss from suicide. There is significant data which shows the impacts of pressure, physical exertion/exhaustion, burnout, high expectations, and stigma on the mental health of athletes. There is also much data on the holistic benefits of peer-based support, and how that relates to the “team” aspect that is built into many sports, even those with individual performance components. These challenges and implications are not unique to individuals who are pursuing athletic careers or elite involvement, and there is much need to provide inclusive and accessible support to those who engage in athletics at any level (club, recreational, adult casual leagues) and may not have the ability or means to benefit from organizational (high school, college, facility-based, professional team-based, etc.) resources. The objective of PG30 is to provide team-minded wellness guidance to athletes of any level facing mental health struggles and personal growth challenges. PG30 aims to address and break barriers to access including stigma and availability of resources. We hope to address and improve mental and physical health through educational opportunities, supportive processing groups, open space for recreation and discussion, and connection to additional relevant resources and opportunities. The programs and tournaments further our exempt purposes by providing learning, recreational, and wellness opportunities to individuals and families in need in the community. These programs and activities aim to reduce stigma and eliminate barriers to accessing and engaging in holistic wellness plans with the aim of promoting mental and physical wellness while raising awareness and having crucial conversations about depression, stress, anxiety, and suicide. PG30 aims to provide a space for personal growth by giving opportunities to explore wellness tools that are congruent to the athletic- or team-minded individual/group to promote positive coping strategies, building a support system, and engaging with the community to seek resources and promote inclusivity and access to individual and group wellness planning.
