Description

The Lombard Historical Society includes a dedicated staff, board members, volunteers, and interns that represent the individuals and families that call Lombard home today. We are a society that embraces and celebrates everyone’s story, and we are committed to continuing to represent and reflect the beautiful lives of the people of our community who write Lombard’s collective story today and every day. In November 2020, LHS received a $750,000 Illinois Public Museum Capital Grant to be used to expand and upgrade our Carriage House at 23 West Maple Street.

The funds will be used to update the archive, and provide more storage for the collections as well as new offices for staff and volunteers, a new gift shop space, modifications for ADA accessibility, and a new kitchen space for Society events. The enlarged and enhanced Carriage House will be a key downtown community hub in a centralized location, offering unique resources and assistance to Lombard residents and visitors through the archive and collections, educational presentations, and exposure to artifacts for grades K-12 students, engaging speakers on timely topics and recreational activities including concerts, themed house tours and cemetery events.

The grant was made available through the Illinois Public Museum Capital Grants Program, funded through Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois multi-year state capital program. Like any successful nonprofit, we wouldn’t be able to achieve what we aim to accomplish without the support of a dedicated core of volunteers, members, and donors. Unfortunately, because of the rising costs of construction materials, the actual cost of the proposed expansion is going to cost more than the original project grant proceeds, $100,000 more, in fact. As part of our efforts to raise the additional funds, on September 24, 2022, we are hosting our 50th Anniversary Celebration which will include a number of activities to help us reach our fundraising goal.
