Abingdon Earth Day Celebration
Other Event Type for Virginia Congress of Parents & Teachers/ Abingdon Elem PTAApr 23, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
With five major languages spoken by families at Abingdon Elementary - English, Spanish, Amharic, Mongolian, and Arabic - our school garden helps break down these language barriers to engage friends and neighbors within our culturally diverse school community. It is our goal to collaborate with our science teacher and her Eco Action Club to help maintain the garden momentum at our Title I school with 726 students. The school garden requires a year round volunteer base to assist with garden goals, and we aspire for students to enjoy the first hand experience about our food supply while concurrently providing produce to food-insecure families at our school. We like to maintain the garden momentum by providing a special raffle and snacks to our volunteers who show up to help. At our prior MLK Day of Service Garden Event we hosted 81 volunteers, and we hope to turn out the crowd at our Earth Day event to celebrate our 32nd anniversary of our school garden and to host a ribbon cutting ceremony for an Eagle Scout student who recently build a custom garden shed for our school. We will also be weeding the garden grounds and picking up litter on our school campus.
