Description

Papayago Rescue House, Inc. (PRH) is launching an annual photography contest in support of National Pet Bird Day on September 17, 2023.  The contest aims to inspire, inform, and communicate love and life with captive parrots through a campaign of striking images.  The competition is open to animal lovers, budding photographers, and those with a keen eye for an unique image.  This contest isn't for professionals making at least 80% of their annual income through their pictures.

The winning images will be selected by a jury that include Donna Bourdon, a wildlife photographer and Bird Photographer of the Year 2022; Tim Flach, one of the foremost animal photographers, Kathy LaFollett, an animal activist, author, humorist, and artist; and Judith Richmond Archer, CEO of the parrot rescue and sanctuary support group The Parrot Posse.

Competition Details:

Entries Open: July 1, 2023

Entries Close: August 1, 2023

Winners announced on August 6, 2023

Theme:  We are looking for striking, memorable, and unique images depicting parrots showing their "true colors", interacting with their surroundings in a safe and respectful manner.

Category:  Audience choice with the most votes.  Online submissions.  We'll publish the winner and runners-up in our August newsletter, website, and social media. The entry fee to enter is $5.00 per picture for a maximum of 3 pictures.  $1.00 per vote.

Category:  Growing up with a parrot.  Online submissions.  Open to young adults ages 13 through 18 years of age.  One winning image will be chosen from young adult photographers.  We are asking young people to capture the essence of their relationship with a parrot (parrots do include budgies also known as parakeets, cockatiels, et al).  In color or black and white.  The entry fees are $15 for one image, $30 for three images.

Category:  The world according to a captive parrot.  Online submissions.  Capture an image of what the world might look like to a pet bird.  This can be in color or in black and white. The entry fees are $15 for one image, $30 for three images.

Category:  Creatively parrot.  Online submissions.  Abstract, creative with the tools, all to show the nuances of the captive parrot.  The entry fees are $15 for one image, $30 for three images.

PRH hopes to use the competition to raise awareness of parrot well-being and welfare throughout the United States.  The proceeds from the contest will support PRH's mission to rescue, rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome or sanctuary parrots in captivity.  By entering the contest, entrants agree to the unlimited non-exclusive use of high-resolution images for activities in all media, including social media, online, and print, in relation to the contest and all promotional activities. In turn, PRH will ensure to credit the photographers with their associated pictures for due recognition each and every time the photo is used.
