Description

My name is Renuka Sharma and I serve as manager for community engagement at the Chicago Citywide Literacy Coalition (the Coalition). We are hosting our annual awards ceremony, Beyond Books – Supporting Adult Literacy in Chicago on Wednesday, April 6, at the world-renowned Newberry Library after a two yrs hiatus!  This year is special. We will be recognizing The Honorable Secretary of State Jesse White for his retirement and dedication to adult literacy. Additionally, the Coalition will recognize long-time CCLC supporter David Pesquiera from The McCormick Foundation, an adult learner and Shirley T. Jenkins Award adult education provider, Kathy Allison. We anticipate more than 200 civic and not-profit leaders to attend this year’s event that will include heavy appetizers, beverages, live music and raffle opportunities.

Nearly half a million adults in Chicago would benefit from adult basic education instruction. As part of its work, the Coalition provides training and resources to adult educators to strengthen their capacities and develop best practices to serve learners with the greatest needs on the city’s South and West sides. The funds raised during Beyond Books will go towards building more avenues for adults with low skills to access educational services and achieve their career goals through addressing the social determinants of health, work, education and life.

We were hoping that the Navy Pier might be willing to offer a small in-kind donation for our silent auction for the event. Your support will continue to equip Chicago’s adult literacy providers with the necessary resources and training to help adult learners, and their families, thrive. Prize donors will receive recognition of their generosity in our newsletter, in the event program, and on our website. You can send donations to renuka@ chicagocitywideliteracy.org or mail them to 1016 W Jackson, Chicago IL 60607. If you have any questions, please contact me at 312-617-2837 if you have any questions.

The Coalition is dedicated to promoting a more literate and vibrant Chicago. I humbly thank you for your assistance and consideration.
