Description

The Firefighters Burn Institute is reaching out to see if you might consider donating a raffle/auction prize to one of our upcoming fundraisers. What began in 1973 with one person in a small corner office of our now historic Fire Station No. 9, the Firefighters Burn Institute has grown into one of the largest firefighter-run nonprofits in the nation.

Burn survivors from various states, and Mexico, participate in our free recovery and reintegration programs. To assist us in providing our programs free of charge, we are requesting an auction/raffle gift for our annual Birdies for Burns Golf Tournament fundraiser which takes place on May 13th at Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln, CA., or for our Luau on the Links fundraiser on June 29th being held at The Pavilion at Haggin Oaks.

Following a tragic plane crash, Sacramento City Fire Captain Cliff Haskell founded the Firefighters Burn Institute with a mission to establish a specialized burn care unit at UC Davis Health. Today, the Firefighters Burn Institutes Regional Burn Center at UC Davis Health provides advanced burn treatment to adults. We also work closely with Shriners Children’s where free care is provided to children. Our Executive Board is the Executive Board of the Sacramento Area Fire Fighters Local 522. Fifty years later, we are proud to carry on Cliff’s mission of serving the Burn Community.

Our programs include burn survivor support groups co-facilitated with UC Davis Health, recovery retreats for adult burn survivors, recovery camps for the youngest of burn survivors (ages 1 – 6), and their families/caregivers, as well as a week-long camp for burn survivors (ages 6 – 18). While the old saying goes "It takes a village to raise a child," we believe it takes a village to help a burn survivor heal physically and emotionally.

Additionally, we provide free fire prevention and education programs, and educational scholarships to burn survivors and burn care professionals. Our Youth Firesetter Program works to reduce fire injuries and deaths by providing assessments, psychological referrals, and education to youth who demonstrate firesetting behavior. All family members are included in this three-night academy. Families of burn-injured firefighters are supported with accommodations and more through our Liaison Response Team.

Below is a statement from a grandmother whose granddaughter (above) was burned by a pot of boiling water while visiting from out of state. Her parents flew to her side and the journey began.

"As gut-wrenching as the tragedy of your 2 ½ year-old granddaughter spending 7 weeks and as many surgeries in the ICU burn unit is, the uplifting hope and healing that came from the Little Heroes Family Burn Camp was like salve on a wound. The Firefighters Burn Institute held our precious grandchild, her siblings, and her parents for a weekend, giving hope, support, and encouragement…letting them know they are not alone. Little Heroes Family Burn Camp showed the way forward for my beautiful, strong, courageous family. It is the kindness of others shadowing tragedy that pulls us forward.”   ~Grandma Denise 5.27.2023
