Description

The Firefighters Burn Institute is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity run by firefighters and civilian staff whose mission is to provide burn recovery and reintegration programs to burn survivors of all ages and their families. We are reaching out in hopes you will support us with a raffle or auction gift for our Birdies for Burns Golf Tournament on May 12th or for our Luau on the Links Tropical Fundraiser on May 31st. Additionally, we are holding a Pebble Beach Raffle if you are interested in participating. The package is three nights at the Lodge at Pebble Beach for two with golf at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Tickets are $50/each or 3/$100.00 with the drawing taking place on the evening of May 12th and winner being notified by telephone. You do not need to be present to win.

Our fundraisers not only provide revenue for our free recovery and reintegration programs for burn survivors of all ages and our fire prevention programs, the generosity of our donors recently assisted us in purchasing life-changing laser equipment for the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center at UC Davis Health. Ablative lasers effectively treat burn scars by removing all or part of the skin. The body’s natural healing processes then replace the damaged skin with new and healthy tissue, significantly reducing the appearance of the scars. “For over 50 years, the first thing anyone would notice about me would be the scars on my face. Like many survivors, I was bullied, taunted, and mocked as a child. Even as an adult, people stare at me. Now, thanks to the lasers, many people don't immediately notice that I am burned. I am not ashamed to be scarred, but it is a relief to blend in a bit more. I feel lucky to have access to this state-of-the-art treatment.” Dr. Lise Deguire, Psy.D., Burn Survivor, pictured above.

Fire and burn prevention education is the most effective way to reduce the number of serious burn injuries. In 2024, a record number of 8,000 individuals received free fire prevention education from the Firefighters Burn Institute at numerous public safety fair events including Camp Smokey at the CA State Fair, as well as through our Youth Firesetter Program. There were approximately 900 attendees at our Safety Fair just last month.

Reintegrating into the public eye after a severe burn injury can easily deepen the trauma of the accident. It requires support from family, friends, peers, and the community. While the old saying goes "It takes a village to raise a child," we believe it takes a village to help a burn survivor heal physically and emotionally. We greatly appreciate your consideration and thank you for being a part of the burn community village.
