Description

My name is Michelle Lester; I am the Director of the Donor Family NetworkSM (a subsidiary of A Little Mark Inc) as well as a donor mom. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides support to the unique group of families who gave the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation. Whether it was a choice their loved one made before their death by signing the Donor Registry or a choice the family made, their decision enhanced and saved lives of many. Another donor mom and I started the Donor Family Network after both of us lost our sons just months apart. Her 10-day old son Mark and my 16-year-old son Robby both gave the gift of life. We not only provide support to newly bereaved families but we encourage and help in training donor family members. They want to help spread the truth about organ donation because only someone that has been in that situation can tell you the stories of how the donation helped them through one of the roughest things you can go through. We reimburse members for expenses that they may incur while volunteering to attend events to speak about organ, eye and tissue donation. Another donor mom, Karen Kline and I are co-managers of our local Transplant Games of America team, Team Finger Lakes. The Transplant Games of America are held every 2 years when thousands of transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, individuals on the waiting list, caregivers, transplant professionals, supporters and spectators join for a celebration of life! During this time, 42 state teams and several international teams compete in over twenty athletic and recreational competitions. In addition to medaling events there are over 60 additional special events held throughout the period. In the past 22 years we have assisted sending 35-40 local donor families. To do these things for the families we have to raise our own funds. We are a nonprofit and all the money raised goes directly back to the families. Other than office supplies and postage there are no administrative costs to run the DFN, all the participants are volunteers and are members of a donor family or a transplant recipient. We are holding a “Donate Life” Motorcycle Run on September 9th, 2023. We will ride flying the Donate Life Flag that are given to new donor families that first fly at the hospital where their loved one made their donation. We will take a scenic ride up Skaneateles Lake to Owasco Lake and back to Marcellus Park. At the park we will have a table to register people to become organ eye and tissue donors. We have a musical duo, a liver transplant recipient and his wife playing during the afternoon. We will also have raffles and silent auction items. We would be honored to have you participate in some way to help us raise funds for the Donor Family Network and Team Finger Lakes with donated items to make the raffle baskets, silent auction items or direct monetary donation.
