Description

The Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports the Down syndrome community in Northern Virginia. The mission of our organization is to ensure all individuals with Down syndrome in the Northern Virginia area, and their families, receive the support necessary to participate in, contribute to and achieve fulfillment of life in their communities.

We:

-Help families adjust to the diagnosis and/or birth of a child with Down syndrome;
-Provide individuals with Down syndrome, and their families, with educational, social and recreational programs and community events that allow families to meet, interact and learn from each other;
-Increase community awareness of the capabilities and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome; and
-Support local organizations that serve the Down syndrome community.

Every year we host our largest annual fundraising event, the 2024 DSANV Buddy Walk. This year marks the 20th anniversary of our event! We are so excited and hope to make it the biggest one yet! Not only is this fundraiser a great time, but the money that we bring in accounts for more than 50% of our annual budget. All of the money that we raise will go right back into our members.  We use these funds to develop programs for individuals with Down syndrome which focus on increasing inclusive social opportunites, skills development in the areas of education, life skills, and career development, and health/wellness.  We also use our funds to provide families with webinars/in-person trainings to assist them with navigating the IEP process, supporting their children as they age out of the school system, navigating difficult medical conditions, and behavioral and communication support.

This year's event will take place on October 6, 2024 at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. Come one, come all! It isn't a buddy walk without buddies!

Thank you so much for your consideration!
