History in the Making
Other Event Type for San Diego Fire Rescue FoundationOct 11, 2017 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Women have served as firefighters for more than 200 years, yet they still make up less than 4% of all firefighters in the U.S. The benefits of diversity in the fire service include, among other things, building trust and bridging barriers in the community it serves. For 40 years the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) has included women firefighters. They bring to the workplace the same set of skills required of their male counterparts: dedication to their work, physically fit, good communication skills, respect for their co-workers, compassion for those they serve, and the ability to do their job effectively and efficiently.
Imagine walking into the workplace knowing you’ll be faced with countless forms of discrimination, including: hazing, ill-fitting gear, lack of private bathroom facilities, gender barriers to job retention and advancement, and more. These are just a few of the issues women faced, and in some cases still face, as firefighters.
The SDFD, in partnership with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation, is hosting a History in the Making reception to celebrate 40 years of women in the SDFD. The reception includes food and beverage, a champagne toast, speakers, and a chance for guests to visit with active and retired members.
The SDFD would be proud to partner with you as a sponsor or in-kind donor for this unique event. We are seeking sponsorships and in-kind donations for the 100 women who have served and are serving in the SDFD. Donations from this event benefit the Girls Empowerment Camp that is designed to train and mentor future generations of women in the SDFD.
