NEED
The leading cause of death for Americans under 50 today is overdose. Effective treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health challenges saves lives. The New York Times has dubbed the COVID-19 pandemic a “national relapse trigger”. Over 100,000 deaths were related to drug overdose between April 2020 - April 2021 according to preliminary data from the CDC. It is the highest number of deaths ever recorded in a 12-month period. Uncertain times combined with social isolation have taken an immense toll on people with substance use disorders, making reinforcement and investment in behavioral health treatment one of the utmost public health concerns.

IMPACT
The leading cause of death for Americans under 50 today is overdose. In 2021, Gateway served over 15,000 clients in over 16 Illinois communities, another 2,300 via its gateway connect virtual recovery community, and thousands more across the country through its corrections division. Effective treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges saves lives.

MISSION
Gateway Foundation is a national, non-profit organization committed to reducing substance abuse and co-occurring mental health problems through effective and efficient treatment programs.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION & BACKGROUND
Gateway Foundation is a leading non-profit provider of addiction treatment in the U.S. Since its founding on Chicago’s South Side in 1968, Gateway has served over one million people with substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health challenges. Gateway is a recipient of the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, serving clients through its community and corrections divisions, and as of 2020 its burgeoning online platform gateway connect.

Gateway specializes in SUD interventions at 16 Illinois facilities: Chicago, Gurnee, Skokie, Lake Villa, Aurora, Joliet, Pekin, Springfield, Jacksonville, Swansea, Caseyville and Carbondale, and recently opened outpatient facilities in Skokie and Downers Grove. Expert clinicians understand that addiction is a disease of the brain and should be treated with addiction medicine using the best practices healthcare has to offer. Accessibility to Gateway treatment combats our ongoing national and regional addiction crisis. Driven by a relentless organizational culture of continuous improvement and core values of integrity, teamwork, opportunity, adaptation and compassion, Gateway is proud to be ranked among the best addiction treatment centers in the nation by Newsweek/Statistica in 2020.
