Description

Supporting the new US based division of Extended Hands and supporting a tour of schools, colleges, and cultural centers starting in DC & NY. Extended Hands was created to foster developmental and sustainable solutions to eradicate fistula and improve maternal health through massive awareness campaigns and health system intervention programs. The majority of their programs have been designed to support women in Western Africa.

Extended Hands partners with local/community-based organizations in building awareness about general health, fistula prevention, maternal health, and family planning services. Helping deconstruct myths and misconceptions about fistula in rural communities. The community awareness programs are also deployed to educate communities about the importance of skilled birth attendance (and healthcare support services general) in rural and disenfranchsied communities.

This June we screening the feature film 'Dry' at these organizations and hosting q&a's/panels to build awareness in those areas. We are also hosting online fundraising and more awareness activities through social media.

More about Extended Hands:

We support capacity building programs for non-physician healthcare workers including nurse midwives to provide emergency obstetric care. Upgrading, equipping and constructing operating rooms so that the centers can provide quality emergency obstetric care and fistula repairs surgeries. In addition to other advocacy, the organization has been engaged in campaigns to facilitate the provision of fistula repair surgeries for women in the rural communities in Nigeria. They have facilitated free fistula surgical repairs for women and girls in Sokoto, Kebbi, Cross Rivers, Oyo and Kwara states in Nigeria and have developed a strategy for increasing this capacity dramatically across Western Africa over the next five years.

Their awareness campaigns have supported change including dramatic policy changes regarding child marriage across Western Africa and in impact sectors around the world. This summer they are also building awareness and communities in the urban area's in the North East including New York & Washington DC - area's where disenfranchised communities (especially immigrant communities) exist unprotected in our own neighborhoods. We believe that all people deserve health care and that all women deserve dignified maternal & reproductive healthcare. Together each day we move one step closer.
