Maywood Educational Fair
Other Event Type for California State University Fullerton Educational LeadershipOct 14, 2017 from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM
The graduate students of the Master of Science in Higher Education program at California State University, Fullerton in coordination with the College of Education and the Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership, will be hosting the Maywood Education Fair at Saint Rose of Lima School on Saturday, October 14, 2017.
The Maywood Education Fair is our opportunity to demonstrate to high school students and their families how obtaining a college degree is possible. Our annual fair has reached over 2,000 residents in the past eight years and awarded 24 scholarships ranging from $250.00 to $1,000.00 to college bound students in 2016. As you may know, Maywood is a predominantly Latino, low-income, underserved community. Approximately 48% of students from Maywood and surrounding southeast cities graduate from high school, and of those, only a small percentage continue to pursue higher education. At the same time, we know there are highly motivated and capable students and committed parents in this community with goals of attending college.
The Maywood Education Fair has gained credibility within the community and provided awareness regarding college admissions, financial aid, and other resources to the residents of Maywood and surrounding cities. From 2009 to 2013, there was a 4.4% increase in students attending college from Maywood. From 2000 to 2013, there was a 2.3% to 4.3% increase in the number of Bachelor’s degree or higher obtained. We are hoping that
the Maywood Education Fair will be our most successful one yet!
