Description

Hillside Recreation Center, located in the Northwest section Philadelphia, is one of 170 recreation centers and playgrounds that offer programs, green spaces, and safe environments for city residents. In August 2021, Hillside’s supervisor Lonnie Cohen unexpectedly passed away at work. Lonnie dedicated his life to the youth and families across the city for over 25 years. He supervised numerous recreation centers, directed operations for the Broad Street Run, and served as a Union Steward.

Lonnie’s passion and dedication was most recognized as the Commissioner for the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation’s (PPR) Indoor and Outdoor Youth Soccer Program. The PPR Youth Soccer Program serves 750 youth participants around the year through the 10 organizations that consist of 8-12 teams. In honor of Lonnie’s legacy, loved ones and colleagues have setup the Lonnie Cohen Memorial Scholarship Fund that will award grants and scholarships directly to the PPR Youth Soccer organizations and participants. The funding will allow recipients to upgrade equipment, purchase uniforms, build playing fields, offer scholarships, and so much more for the years to come.

Lonnie is honored for his dedication to the families and Youth Soccer Program in Philadelphia, but he is remembered for his love of golf. On July 21, 2022, Hillside will be hosting a “Mini Masters.” The Mini Masters will include an onsite Mini-Golf course, raffles, refreshments, and various family friendly activities. We anticipate over 100 participants during the 5 hour event. All proceeds will be donated to the Lonnie Cohen Memorial Scholarship Fund. Your donation of a gift basket or gift certificates will be used as a raffle to help raise proceeds during the event.

Your business will be recognized at the event through marketing materials and social media posts. Most importantly, your business and donation will give the opportunity to play soccer across Philadelphia, just as Lonnie did until his final days.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and please contact me with any questions!
