Description

Our mission is to help children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized instruction with measurable results.

We believe in the power of educational equity to interrupt systemic racism, poverty, and social inequality. Racism and anti-Blackness have penetrated every system and institution, including our education system where students of color have not received equitable learning opportunities. Our organization exists to uproot these deeply ingrained educational obstacles.

We will have Read to Succeed event, held for the first time since 2018. Reading Partners’ goal is simple: support the incredible community of volunteers and AmeriCorps members, close literacy gaps, and serve students. The organization was founded in 1999 by three community leaders committed to improving equitable access to literacy support for children in Menlo Park, CA. Thanks to a partnership with the NewSchools Venture Fund, Reading Partners expanded in 2010 to Washington, DC, the first region outside of California, with a mission to help children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized instruction with measurable results. During the 2023-24 school year, Reading Partners serves 700 K-5 students in 14 Title I schools and Kingman Boys and Girls Club in Wards 1,2, 4, 6, 7, and 8. We know that the pandemic is still significantly impacting our students, so we believe it’s more important than ever to support access to critical literacy interventions for all DC students who need them.
