Presented by The Low & Slow Running Club of Del Mar
The Red Nose Run is sponsored annually by the Low and Slow Running Club of Del Mar, which consists of runners of various ages and running abilities, who have been getting together for Saturday morning runs for many years.
In 1992 several members started the Run with one charity, Fresh Start Surgical Gifts . Over the years, the number of runners and the amount of contributions has grown from 35-40 runners and $5,000-$6,000 to over 200 runners and $17,000 in 2012. We have given over $186,000 to Fresh Start over the past 22 years.
In addition, we added the Semper Fi Fund charity in the last seven years; to which the run contributed $61,500. Since the run is put on by a small group of runners, there is NO OVERHEAD cost, other than the run itself. After the expense of the run, ALL funds are distributed to these two charities.
The event continues to benefit these deserving non-profit 501(c)(3) charities, and during the past 23 years we have raised over $247,000.00 for these two important causes.
We raise money for these charities in two ways: an entry fee to participate in the run and soliciting cash/non cash contributions directly from businesses. The non cash contributions (golf clubs, vacations, tours, etc.) are auctioned (immediately after the run), which accounts for a significant amount of the funds raised for the charities. This year’s 24th annual run will take place on the beach in front of the Poseidon Restaurant in Del Mar on Friday afternoon, December 11th, at 2:00 PM.
The course includes a 5K and a 3K run/walk on the beach.
After the event,we meet in the Poseidon Restaurant for refreshments, followed by door prizes,recognition of 5K race winners, raffle and live auction items and the presentation of contributions to both charities.
