Description

One in 26 people will be diagnosed with Epilepsy and 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their life.  According to the CDC, in 2015 (the most recent statistics available) "there were "about 3.4 million people with epilepsy nationwide: 3 million adults and 470,000 children."   The CDC also noted that if you "[t]hink of a school with 1,000 students--this means about 6 of them could have epilepsy."  (https://www.cdc.gov/epilepsy/about/fast-facts.htm)

In 2011, the Veterans Administration (VA) treated over 87,000 Veterans with seizure diagnoses.  In 2013, a VA study found that nearly 70% of Veterans with seizures also have Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or both.  The seizures resulting were found to be a mixture of epileptic and non-epileptic.  The VA researchers explained that it is not a clear algorithm of those Veterans with epilepsy and those with non-epileptic seizures.  They further explained that the resources and treatment of non-epileptic seizures needs to be a different type of treatment.  The difficulty is in determining whether the seizures are epileptic or non-epileptic because they can look very much alike. Roc Stop Seizures is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the mission to raise awareness for those with Epilepsy and for Veterans with Battle Induced Seizure Disorders.  In October 2022, ROC Stop Seizures' CEO, a Veteran with Epilepsy, set out to walk 1000 miles to further the ROC Stop Seizures' mission to raise awareness .  The Journey of 1000 Miles sets out to show Veterans, children, and adults that they do not have to hide or be silent about their conditions. It empowers others to talk about their condition and advocate for their own needs.  Through talking about these conditions, we can all raise awareness and help promote research and education for everyone.  Most of all, it helps to show that people with Epilepsy or seizures should #neverquit.

Heroes Strong is a 501(c)(3 ) Organization made up of citizens and Heroes who have seen, up close and personally, what people do for others and how they help others everyday.  On October 1, 2023, Heroes Strong will honor ROC Stop Seizures for its work raising awareness for those with Epilepsy and Veterans with epileptic and non-epileptic seizures at TopGolf in Lake Mary, Florida.

ROC Stop Seizures will be having a silent auction at the Heroes Strong event to help it further its mission to raise epilepsy and seizure awareness and education. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to ROC Stop Seizures.
