About The Story Theatre

The Company

As part of our non-hierarchical model, our Artistic Governing Ensemble shares producing and creative power communally. We believe that every artist in the room—from our team of directors to our inspired cast to the designers joining us at tech — shares responsibility in helping our plays reach their potential, and, as such, we encourage a collaborative, equitable artistic environment. In 5 short years since incorporation, The Story has won multiple Joseph Jefferson Awards, and has been featured in the New York Times, and Chicago Reader. Additionally, we have created an equitable flat management structure, and in Season IV, are piloting hourly payment of all artists — an endeavor that is unheard of in non-union theatres.

Mission Statement

The Story Theatre will pose questions, rather than provide answers. We develop and produce new work that is whimsical, melancholic, mythic in vision, and intimate in scale. We are run by a governing artistic ensemble, who ensures our work is actively dismantling racism and inequity, while cultivating community through activism and catharsis.
