Description

HACA is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization established in 1964 to serve persons with bleeding disorders and their families in Washington DC area. We are a diverse community that offers education and networking for all people with bleeding disorders including children, non-native speakers, and women.

We support children: Children who are living with bleeding disorders need supplemental clotting factor to live healthy, normal lives.  Children with these disorders need to have a needle inserted into their veins or under their skin multiple times a week.  At our summer camp program, they learn how to give the medication to themselves.  This gives them confidence and a sense of self-reliance.

We support Spanish-speaking members: We have many members who have emigrated to the DC area to get healthcare for their child with a bleeding disorder. We offer interpreters at educational programs, as well as programs specifically for this demographic of members. This helps the parents and the person with a bleeding disorder grow confident in dealing with their healthcare providers and handling a chronic medical condition.

We support women: For many years, women were underrepresented in care for people with bleeding disorders. Bringing women together to talk about how bleeding disorders affect their lives – and teaching them how to advocate for themselves – has empowered them to get the diagnosis and care they need.

We also support the parents: We host infusion clinics where parents learn how to infuse their children. When a baby is born with a bleeding disorder, parents experience fear, anger and worry, but we help to alleviate those emotions through classes where they can learn under the watchful eye of a nurse to administer these treatments themselves.

In order to fund these programs, HACA is having a fundraiser on May 12, 2024 at Two Twisted Posts to raise money to help support children and their families who are living with chronic and painful bleeding disorders. We are asking for donations of items that HACA can use for its raffle or silent auction.

The money raised will go towards:

·       Sending children to camp

·       Providing education for new families whose children were just diagnosed with hemophilia or von Willebrand disease.

·       Helping support our members by purchasing medical bracelets, helmets, and gas cards.

·       Hiring interpreters to come to our events for our Spanish speaking members.

·       Supporting our period poverty program.

HACA is a non-profit 501c3 and your donation is tax-deductible.  Our Federal Tax ID # is 54-1702561.
