The Owen Shay Foundation was started in 2015 to assist special needs children and families. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit 81-1820729. The foundation currently focuses on Buffalo, NY and the surrounding areas. The Owen Shay Foundation does have a non- discrimination policy: activities shall not be limited on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, age, gender, political affiliation, or disability. The Foundation looks for monetary and in – kind donations thru out the year to assist in funding and planning of activities.
Mission Statement: The Owen Shay Foundation was started in 2015 to help families and children born with birth defects and disabilities. The foundation helps children thru art, therapeutic recreation and community events. We hope to enhance mental, physical, spiritual and emotional child development. We hope to increase overall social skills and improve the lives of children with special needs.
Owens Story: Owen was born on May 10,2015. He was twin B, born 10 weeks early and weighed 3 pounds. His parents were told he was not going to make it thru the night. He was septic when he was born and also had numerous birth defects. Owen is a fighter, a survivor. He spent 96 days in the NICU, He has had 9 surgeries so far and has a long road ahead of him. Owen will face many challenges in his future as he is globally delayed and has multiple disabilities. Owen is legally blind ,has single sided deafness and recently diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
Background: The Foundation was started in 2015. Heather Mieth, Owens mom and foundation founder needed a positive focus for her energy while Owen was going thru numerous procedures. The foundation was started as Heather wanted to give back to the community that was currently helping her and her child. Heathers vision was to create a foundation that helped families and children born with birth defects and disabilities. The foundation currently helps children thru art, therapeutic recreation and community events. We hope to enhance mental, physical, spiritual and emotional child development. We hope to create awareness around disabilities in the community and hope to act as a resource of information. We are currently working on mentoring and support programs for children with special needs and there families.
The Owen Shay Foundation Accomplishments/ Plans: Currently – Planning our Summer party for special needs families. And we are planning for our 3rd annual fundraiser to be held on October 28,2018.
May 2018- Made a donation to Birthday Boxes and more also gave a donation to a family gathering books and blankets for the NICU. January 2018- Partnered with Snuggled In Love, a new organization that is making blankets for children at the new hospital. Gift card donation made. Also working with A Special Kind Of Love to assist special needs children during there Birthday. December2017 delivered goody bags to Children’s hospital and The Ronald McDonald house for the holidays. Adopted a child with Autism for Christmas. Assisted several special needs families in the Buffalo area with Christmas presents and gift cards. 2017 adopted some families for Thanksgiving and delivered meals to them. October 2017 had our second annual fundraiser. July 2017-Co- Sponsored Summer Picnic at Houghton Park with Special Kind of Love. May 2017-Delivered a Feel Better Box for Mashayla (6 year old with Brain Cancer), Delivered 20 Book Bags to Book Bags of Hope, Delivered Scentsy Super Buddy Bears To Children’s Hospital Buffalo NICU, Sent Donation to 1boy4change to get Warrior Beads back up and running. Sent Donation to partner with a mother/daughter bringing books and blankets to the NICU. April 2017 –Placed order for Super Bears – Being delivered to NICU in May. Feel Better Box made and delivered for little girl that was in a serious accident. March 2017- Donation to Feel Better Friends. Donation made to Birthday Boxes and More (for a 4 year old recently diagnosed with Leukemia). Donation to Helping from the Heart – (Making Easter Baskets for Children’s Hospital). Donation to Lisa Lyons and Courage for Lyons Cub’s – Easter Baskets for Children’s Hospital. December 2016- Delivered 20 Care Bags to The Ronald McDonald House Buffalo. 20 Bags to New Moms in The NICU at Children’s Hospital- Buffalo. Sponsored an 8 year old boy with special needs in Buffalo for Christmas. Sponsored a teen thru Kailey’s Kindness for Christmas. Sponsored a Child thru Little Miracles Holiday Helpers. Participated in “Be A Blessing Campaign” Grab and Go Bags for Ronald McDonald House Buffalo. October 2016 Made goody Bags for Halloween for Stones Buddies and St. Mary’s School for the Deaf. Had Our First Fundraiser.
Partnerships/Grants and Fundraising: Partnership with Good 360. Yearly Fundraiser and Basket Raffle in October. Grant Received from The Garman Family/ Community Foundation For Greater Buffalo. In March of 2018 we received a Gift from “Enterprise Holdings Foundation.
Detailed description of the initiative: The foundation hopes to raise public awareness and encourage donations to be made thru out the year to assist children with special needs. The foundation has an annual fundraiser in October. The Foundation does accept monetary and in-kind donations thru out the year. As the foundation grows and donations increase we will be able to plan more activities and help additional families. We believe that our efforts in this area will further motivate donors to make dedicated gifts that they know will assist special needs families in the Buffalo, NY area. The foundation hopes to assist in educating the disabled community along with sharing knowledge of resources available.

Current Projects and Needs- Looking for basket donations for our 3rd annual fundraiser on 10/28/18. We are always looking for grant opportunities along with monetary donations and in-kind donations. During the year we accept all donations (Monetary, gift cards, coupons, samples, swag bag items, promotional items, overstocks or anything available. No donation is too big or too small) We are planning our summer get together for special needs children and there families. We are also planning our 3rd annual basket raffle and fundraiser to be held on October 28, 2018. All donations are greatly appreciated. Additional information can be given if requested.
