Description
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month. Since 2010, we have cultured young ladies in recognizing and understanding the dangers of relationship/dating violence and bullying through our Healthy Relationships Campaign; encouraging them to better identify and live out the benefits of developing healthy relationships and friendships. We work with parents and community members to help them act as effective barriers against teens engaging in harmful relationships.

Through our collaborations with organizations and individuals in the Greater Baton Rouge area, we will be able to leverage our resources and expand the scope of our reach to both teen females and teen males.

The Audience:
In 2010, we hosted our first four Campaigns in Atlanta and Lawrenceville, Georgia. One of our partnering organizations in that first year was Elite Ladies of Atlanta (Kenya Miles, Founder & CEO), who invited us in June to tailor a mini-course in relationship violence and relationship related media literacy for their 12-14 year old girls.

In the last four years, we’ve connected with 517 awesome girls, over 300 mothers and worked in partnership with several girl-geared organizations in Georgia, New Orleans and Baton Rouge to introduce our Campaign. Our last Campaign in Baton Rouge covered bullying, dating violence, media literacy and misogyny and a Father’s Forum; culminating with a t-shirt drive and photoshoot featuring some really great girls in the Baton Rouge area.

Past Participant Demographics:
100% female
~93% African American
~2% Hispanic
~1% Caucasian

In 2015:
In light of the recent major journalistic and social media coverage of issues like sexual assault, public displays of relationship violence and legal issues surrounding these topics and because we work exclusively with females, our next project will expand the scope of our reach by partnering with organizations that target both males and females and will include a “Father’s Forum”.

Between the organizations with which we partner, we will have sessions commencing simultaneously across the Baton Rouge area on Saturday February 14, 2015 and Saturday February 28, 2015; with a target reach of 500 males and females and 150 parents and guardians for each day. Each of the four sessions will engage in the same basic relationship related programming, but, their final media projects will be different.

Our plans for this upcoming project include, but are not exclusive to: relationship focused media literacy, parent education forums, a letter writing campaign and 4 youth-led media projects that will be distributed in the community and via social media.
