This non-profit established in the memory of Emily Shane, who was murdered at the age of 13 by a driver on PCH, promotes good deeds and assistance to middle school students who are at risk due to their academic struggles. The Emily Shane Foundation prevents students from establishing negative behaviors such as low self-esteem, joining a gang, or abusing drugs. Therefore, the Foundation contributes to the physical and mental well being of each of the individuals in the program. The SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program provides intensive and individual support to at-risk middle school students who are failing/struggling academically and could not otherwise afford this much needed support. In this after school program, trained and vetted mentors/tutors (typically university students or recent graduates) are paired to work with each student. This includes not only help with homework, test preparation, and assignments, but effectively teaching organizational skills. The mentors provide the students with tools and strategies to best overcome their particular challenges. They are like personal coaches and cheerleaders; someone the student can rely on to be there for them to help them achieve their best academic potential. The only "cost" to the student is to participate in our Foundation's "PASS IT FORWARD" campaign. For every mentoring session, the student performs any good deed or act of kindness and enters it on The Foundation website. The Foundation encourages a mindset of "giving back" and compassion for others. It is our youth that are the future; we hope our program will set them on the right path for future success both academically and as meaningful members of their communities and society. Children are currently served across thirteen middle school sites in Culver City, Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, Pico Rivera, Westchester, Malibu, Santa Monica, South Los Angeles, and Watts. It is a lack of resources that is preventing SEA from hiring staff needed to operate more efficiently, and ultimately to grow to meet the tremendous need. There are many more schools where SEA could be operating in the communities we currently serve, in addition to countless more communities across LA - and beyond.
