In June 2007, Abigail Taylor was entrapped by the suction from an uncovered pool drain. Abbey fought for her life through 16 surgeries, a liver transplant, kidney dialysis and chemotherapy. Sadly after 10 months of fighting, Abbey passed away from her injuries. Her hope was that no child would again suffer or die as the result of a preventable entrapment or drowning. The Abbey's Hope Charitable Foundation works tirelessly on her behalf and in her memory.
Since the launch of our Foundation and with the passage of legislation which the Foundation helped to enact, no child has died as a result of an entrapment. We believe our efforts have played a large role in this success. Unfortunately, traditional forms of drowning still plague our community and state. Last year, a record number of children and adults died from this completely preventable accident. So much work still needs to be done.
