Abiona Centre, formerly Massey Centre and Humewood House, offers the most comprehensive program that empowers vulnerable and homeless young moms, aged 13 to 25, and their children to become successful and independent. The young moms who seek our support often come from unimaginably difficult backgrounds including experiencing violence and abuse, poverty, sex trafficking, and homelessness.

Profile of our clients:

  • Over 90% of clients are BIPOC, primarily African-Canadian
  • 94% of the young mothers who accessed services were homeless or under-housed
  • 89% were not enrolled in high school
  • 83% experienced family/partner violence during their pregnancy
  • 72% experienced verbal, emotional, financial or sexual abuses less than 3 months prior to living at Abiona Centre
  • 38% of the young moms became homeless in order to escape family/partner violence
  • 100% are poor with no income or have income below the poverty line.

We offer them a better chance for long-term success by surrounding this young population during their most vulnerable years with critical supports and resources to help stabilize their lives and prepare them to be successful.
