Since 1992, the Active Adult Centre of Mississauga (AACM) has been inspiring older adults (50+) to embrace their vitality, optimize their health and well-being, and broaden their horizons. We currently offer more than 70 engaging and affordable social, recreational, educational and wellness programs (both on-site and virtual) to enhance the physical and mental capacities of our 1000 members. We foster a ”family” sense of community among all members, promoting social interaction, friendship and networking, thereby reducing the impact of isolation for older adults living alone. The AACM also supports a multi-cultural environment, with six different poly-cultural groups and clubs.
For the past 28 months, the AACM has strengthened its community outreach activities to target isolated seniors through telephone reassurance, newsletters, weekly free virtual programs, andCare Kit creation and delivery. More specifically, we’ve delivered over 400 Care Kits to isolated seniors, hosted a thousand virtual classes, worked with local nursing students to create and distribute Activity & Heath Booster Books, provided up-to-date medical and vaccine booking information, held over three dozen workshops helping seniors cope and connect, and ran 25 free on-site dental clinics. Recently we’ve been assisting countless seniors in booking their next COVID-19 booster vaccination appointments.According to our members, these actions proved to be a life-line for many local seniors throughout the course of the pandemic and a trusted source of information and navigation to community resources and support services.
The continued spirit demonstrated by the Centre’s members, staff, and volunteers is what has helped us flourish during these challenging times.
