Agape Nation is non-profit in Etowah County, Alabama that is establishing a day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD). The program has support from leaders and residents in the community that recognize a day program is a much-needed service in a rural area that has limited resources.  Currently, there are few organizations that exist to provide services to this population.  The organizations that do exist are often dead ends for caregivers as they only take state/federal funds, have waiting lists that can be 10 or more years, or they do not provide hours or services that caregivers need for the adult in their care.

Agape Nation was born out of another local non-profit, Maranatha Outreach (dba Maranatha Alabama) who, for the past year, has been hosting monthly events for adults with ID/DD and their caregivers.  Through Maranatha Alabama's efforts, over 100 individuals have been served with recreational and educational events to promote independence and community involvement.  It is through Maranatha Outreach that the needs of the community have been evaluated to inform the development of a cohesive day program for the county.

Agape Nation believes that adults with ID/DD are capable of continued learning therefore is establishing a program to build upon the K-12 school system by providing continued education, recreation, therapeutics, and community involvement.  The organization will provide a school-like environment with level appropriate academics that incorporate therapeutic principles geared towards maintaining and growing skills, increasing independence, and promoting self-worth.  Additionally, the day program will include job training through which adults with ID/DD can participate in economic aspects of the community.
