ACCFB was founded in 1985, when a group of 40 community-based organizations joined forces to form our food bank. They began by distributing USDA surplus commodities to address food insecurity in Alameda County. More than three decades later, we lead the effort to ensure that everyone has plentiful access to nutritious food. We are focused on creating a healthy, prosperous, and just community by working to transform the systems that create hunger and poverty in our region.

Our work includes food distribution programs (countywide food distribution network, children's food program, food recovery program, and research program), and food access programs (emergency food helpline, CalFresh outreach, policy and advocacy, and nutrition education). We have an organization-wide commitment to good nutrition: the clients and communities we serve need us to not just provide food, but to be a partner in health. Nearly 40% of the food we distribute is vitamin-rich fresh produce, such as apples, oranges, pears, sweet potatoes, zucchini, tomatoes, and leafy greens. The rest is nutritious, shelf-stable cereal, legumes, grains, and proteins, along with perishables such as low-fat milk, eggs, and tofu.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, one in five Alameda County residents accessed our services. We estimate that need has now risen to one in four. Since March 2020, we have expanded our network to 423 partner agencies, emergency partners, and direct distribution sites to get food into the hands of Alameda County residents facing food insecurity.
