AMP aims to empower and connect artists and audiences through a wide range of highly physical, evocative, and collaborative contemporary dance forms. We achieve this through our performance and education programs that:

  • supports local dance artists in their creative and professional growth by commissioning original choreography, performance and developmental opportunities.
  • creates an inclusive and welcoming environment that educates and encourages students of all ages and experiences from novice child to adult professional.
  • bridges the gap between audiences and performers to deepen understanding and appreciation of contemporary dance through engagement initiatives.

AMP was founded by Kristin Howe & Joanna Lees in 2011 to create professional opportunities for Twin Cities dance artists. Another foundational goal is to engage with audiences of all backgrounds so they may connect deeply and intentionally to the performance experience. AMP has: produced over 13 mainstage shows with more than 40 new original works/films; provided performance opportunities to 50+ local artists; commissioned over 20 works by local choreographers; offered a variety of workshops/classes for local professional and aspiring artists; built and fostered community between local dance organizations through original shared events; worked with 500+ elementary public school students and hosted educational performances; and toured domestically to New York City, Louisville, Kalamazoo, and Eau Claire.

What Does it Mean to Move BIG?
Move BIG is more than a tagline- it is AMP’s philosophy. Move BIG is advancing the art form of dance in any way we can.  Whether it is through our choreography and performances, collaborations with other artists, engaging audience members, or education and exposure to those in need, we can come together as a community and acknowledge that we serve a purpose that is greater than ourselves.
