AAP-CA, Chapter Three is dedicated to achieving optimal health (physical, mental and social) for every infant, child and adolescent in San Diego and Imperial Counties, and to supporting the role of its membership in achieving this. AAP-CA3 partners with Reach Out and Read to operate Reach Out and Read San Diego. Reach Out and Read's mission is to give young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read's evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups, by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children. Our evidence-based model promotes positive, language-rich interactions and shared reading between parents/caregivers and their young children from birth to five years old as a means of supporting the early relationships that are foundation for healthy development and long-term health and well-being. In San Diego county we serve over 100,000 children every year at 107 pediatric offices.
