The American Water Works Association is an international, nonprofit, scientific and educational society dedicated to providing total water solutions assuring the effective management of water. Founded in 1881, the Association is the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world.
Our membership includes over 4,300 utilities that supply roughly 80 percent of the nation’s drinking water and treat almost half of the nation’s wastewater. Our 51,000 total members represent the full spectrum of the water community: public water and wastewater systems, environmental advocates, scientists, academicians, and others who hold a genuine interest in water, our most important resource.
AWWA's Water Equation was created five years ago in response to the need for workforce advancement in the water industy. Our mission is providing funding for water operator and academic scholarships, students, young professionals and safe water projects in the USA. We award annually $30,000 in scholarships to water and waste water operators to provide them with continuing education, certification and training as well as $175,000 in academic scholarships for studies in engineering, environmental science, public affairs, governmental affairs, policy, IT, communications and finance. Our One AWWA Operator Scholarship has funded over a dozen awards for veterans transitioning to this field.
We fund an annual leader training day for over 125 young professionals to help them discern a clear career path and meet with industry mentors, and we provide financial assistance for water and wastewater projects in underserved communities that would not otherwise receive assistance.
