Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) is a private, nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. ASAC is licensed by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services to provide prevention and treatment services to combat the use of alcohol, tobacco, gambling and other substances. It is accredited by CARF which requires conformance to quality standards that identify areas for improvement and growth and help the organization focus on quality service delivery and patient satisfaction. ASAC has been in operation since 1962. ASAC serves the seven counties of Linn, Benton, Jones, Jackson, Dubuque, Delaware and Clinton. 

 

ASAC's Prevention Services aim is to pro-actively change and strengthen attitudes, actions and trends that will result in reduced substance abuse by educating and empowering individuals and communities. ASAC’s prevention services include substance abuse information and educational programs for youth and adults, researched based community health strategies, community coalitions, and workplace services.

 

ASAC's Treatment Services include evaluation and assessment of individuals to determine if treatment is warranted, and if it is, at what level of intensity. Outpatient treatment which consists of individual sessions and group therapy. Residential treatment for youth, adults and a special program for pregnant women and women with children. Halfway house which provides supportive services in addition to housing to help clients transition back into society after residential treatment.
