What is FTD? FTD is the most common form of dementia for people under age 60.  It represents a group of brain disorders caused by the degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes of the brain. FTD is also requently referred to as frontotemporal demenita, frontotemporal lobar dengeration or pick's disease.  Although age of onset ranges from 21-80, the majority of FTD cases occure between the ages of 45-64.  Therefore, FTD has a substantially greater impact on work, family, and the econcomic burden faced by familes of Alzheimer's.  The major difference bewteen FTD and Alzheimer's is that FTD is personality and Alzheimer's is memory.  Currently there are no medications or cure for FTD.  The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration is the only organziation in the USA that is dedicated to helping patients, their families and supporting reseach, education, advocacy and awareness. FTD is also commonly associated with ALS.
