BCT’s mission is to bring together youth from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow through the collaborative art of musical theatre. Our goal is to impact the lives of students by facilitating a community where youth can share their voice and expand their confidence and self-actualization through the unique tools of musical theatre.

We do this by dismantling systemic barriers in traditional musical theatre education that prohibits the participation and growth of students from historically excluded communities.

The well-being of the “whole child” is centered in our approach to arts education, as we consider what our students need most to thrive, especially those from low-income and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) backgrounds.

We are intentional about representation in our rehearsal rooms, from the students, to the staff, to the content that is created.

We reserve space in each of our classes for low-income students so that our program truly reflects the diversity of Brooklyn. In FY23, 77% of our students attended on scholarship and 74% of our students identified as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color).

Our ORIGINAL MUSICALS are created by teams of professional writers and student "Youth Advisors," with at least half of each writing team identifying as BIPOC. Our plays have equitable-sized roles, so that every child has a moment to shine and find their voice.

Our FREE WEEKEND program, for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, allows us to deepen our impact with students who wouldn't normally have access to an arts education.

Our TEACHING ARTIST TRAINING PROGRAM, inspired by our talented alums, was created to diversify the workforce. In this 18 month program, young adult artists from historically excluded communities receive paid mentorship and training to hone their craft as teaching artists.

Our staff are trained in trauma-informed education so that we can service the whole child and prioritize the social-emotional health of our students. We explore and implement different teaching methods to account for the diverse learning needs of our community.

We are creating the world we want to see at BCT. A place where people from different backgrounds come together to make art, find joy, and lift each other up.
