Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County (BBBSIC) creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth ("Littles") on Whidbey Island. With a quality adult mentor ("Bigs") our Littles are able to face the challenges of daily life with renewed energy, increased skills and an eye toward a positive future. For a minimum of a year, our Bigs and Littles interact one-to-one in school or community-based settings with a focus on exploring current and new interests in a safe environment. Consequently, our youth improve in measurable ways: academically, socially and behaviorally. Throughout the match relationship, BBBSIC staff provides on-going support while monitoring youth safety and progress. BBBSIC also provides free and fun monthly activities for our matches to attend and connects families with other professional resources in the community. It takes a village to raise a child, a notion that has been exemplified by supporters and volunteers involved in our community outreach and fundraising events. With military and first-responder mentors, programs such as our Bigs with Badges campaign bridge the gap between our community's youth and local service men and women. BBBSIC offers Career Connected learning and experiences to our High School Bigs and Littles, and our newest program, DINO (Dabbling IN New Opportunities), provides new expereinces and Social Emotional Learning youth in our programs and on our waitlist. All of our programs are free of charge, and BBBS of Island County remains one of the last true grassroots organizations in the BBBS network.
