For over 47 years Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Durham have been providing mentoring to child and youth in North Durham Region. It is our beleif that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Our mission is to ''enable life changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people" By formally matching a caring adult mentor, a Big, with a local youth, a Little, we are inspiring the next generation of leaders. And mentoring is Fun!
Almost anyone can be a mentor and change a life.By participating in fun activities together and forming a trusted bond with a child, it can potentially rewrite a child's future and also change a mentor's life. We serve children and youth ages 6 to 18 years of age. Some activities that the matches participate in are walks, playing catch, board games, going to sporting events and just talking about their interests and life experiences. Each year, we have the privilege of supporting 250 children and youth - most who are at risk or face adversities.
Children and youth in our program face obstacles related to poverty, learning or developmental disabilitiey, mental health, abuse, discrimination, isolation and family breakdown. Our programs are accessible and inclusive and provide positive mentoring experiences for people from diverse socio-economic, family,ethnic and cultural backgrounds. All of our programs are without fees. Our qualified and professional caseworkers, fine, train and support volunteers during the match process and throughtout the match relationship.
