The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound (BBBSPS) is to create and support 1-to-1 mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We partner with parent guardians and volunteers in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving the following outcomes: educational success; higher aspirations and confidence; better relationships; and an increase in positive behaviors.
Having a mentor guarantees a young person that there is someone who cares about them and lets them know they are not alone. Through the BBBSPS program, Bigs help their Littles navigate day-to-day challenges. Bigs encourage the personal growth and development of their Littles and empower them to identify and achieve their goals.
BBBSPS makes meaningful mentorship matches between volunteers and youth ages 6-20. We then provide the training, resources, and support necessary for those matches to succeed. We create and support matches within the community at large and in partnership with local schools and businesses.
To create these partnerships, the BBBSPS team follows a 5-step process:
Qualify – through partnerships with schools, community & youth organizations, and child welfare groups, our team connects with prospective Littles and their caregivers or case worker to qualify their need and capacity for match success.
Recruit – through referrals, marketing, corporate partnerships, and events, our team recruits new volunteers interested in mentoring.
Interview – all prospective Bigs and Littles are interviewed by BBBSPS staff to get to know their personality and interests. We also thoroughly background check all volunteers via Live Scan, Lexis Nexis, DMV and the FBI.
Match - Bigs and Littles are matched based upon multiple variables with a goal of creating a long-term friendship.
Monitor & Support - We support Bigs and Littles as they face the multitudes of challenges life creates and monitor the matches for safety and longevity.
