OUR MISSION is to help create a culture of literacy by providing books for disadvantaged children for independent reading.

Independent reading is reading that is not tested, is content chosen by the reader, and is done for pleasure or personal fulfillment. Studies suggest that independent readers become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not. Independent reading may be conducted at school during a silent sustained reading (SSR) period or at home, in the car or between classes. Independent reading, even as little as ten minutes a day, has a significant effect on reading test scores.

Book Drive for Kids partners with community organizations, most often Title One schools that enroll 70% or more economically or physically disadvantaged children. We bring a free bookfair to their site at no charge to the organization or the participants. Each child selects, without adult intervention, the book(s) and oftentimes other educational print materials. A short presentation about book ownership, selecting a book at the appropriate reading level, and book genres is given. As the children exit the bookfair, they inscribe their names on specially designed bookplates further reinforcing the concept of book ownership. For many children, it is the first book they can call their own.
