Brett's Bands is organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes in accordance with Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Brett's Bands exists to advance education and awareness of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy ("SUDEP") across the United States. Additionally, Brett's Bands ultimate mission is to be able to provide parents and caregivers with devices that can help prevent unexpected death.

Additional goals and new growth:

  • In 2023 Brett's Bands began distribution of epilepsy and SUDEP educational materials to the local community. This has included to both individuals as well as area primary care providers.
  • Brett would have graduated high school from Platte City, Missouri in 2025. As he had a love for music, the foundation is looking to generate enough capital to launch a new scholarship opportunity for area high school seniors who are pursuing a degree in music. The goal is for this to be initiated with the graduating class of 2025 and become an annual offering.
  • Missouri currently has Will's Law that requires epilepsy training of school employees every 2 years. Brett's Bands is in the process of beginning legislative action specifically for SUDEP. Unfortunately, SUDEP is more common than SIDS but is rarely spoken of in the medical community. Tragically, 85% of families who lose a loved one to SUDEP had never heard of it before. The founder of this organization is a Nurse Practitioner and had never heard of it. Brett's Bands is looking to have laws enacted that would require SUDEP education to be provided to parents and caregivers upon diagnosis of epilepsy and with changes in patient status. This education would be required to be provided during the patient visit as well as in depart education at the conclusion of the visit.
