The BAMC Auxiliary was originally founded in 1953 as a military spouses’ organization. Since then, we have expanded as a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization that serves to provide support to the BAMC patients and military community. We are a private organization and are not part of the Department of Defense or any of its components. While BAMC is a military hospital on Fort Sam Houston, it is also the only Level I trauma center within the Department of Defense and one of two Level I trauma centers within San Antonio, serving the city and the surrounding 22 counties in Southwest Texas. The majority of admitted patients are Active-Duty Military, retirees, and dependents. However, in 2021, 85% of trauma patients seen at BAMC were civilians. Therefore, the BAMC Auxiliary’s goal and mission is to provide an extra level of comfort and enrich the patient experience for our military community and its civilian patient population.

The BAMC Auxiliary provides support to the hospital through service projects, special morale boosting programs, and fundraising events to facilitate our Annual Welfare Grant Program. Our monthly service projects and events not only fill needs for the hospital, but also facilitate needed friendship, community, and support among military families. Examples include volunteering at hospital events, such as Doctor’s Day, selling t-shirts in support of the resiliency of military children, and distributing nacho kits to each social worker for National Social Work Month. We also provide hand molds to the NICU as a bereavement item for families that have lost a newborn as well as make fleece blankets that are distributed in the pediatric unit on a library cart. Through our Annual Welfare Grant Program, we can fulfill requests for patient care and hospital needs that fall outside of normal government budget funding. We are continually fundraising to provide for hospital departments in need of items that would not otherwise be funded by BAMC. Such examples include taxi vouchers for patients needing rides or for residents after long shifts, clothing for trauma and burn patients whose clothes were ruined or destroyed, bathtubs for infants in the mother-baby unit, and educational materials for patients with new diagnoses. Because we operate as a private, non-profit organization, the BAMC Auxiliary plays a unique role at BAMC by providing a wide array of needs for the hospital, military families, and patients.
