Brookwood Christian School serves students who have not been successful in public or private schools due to their unique learning needs. Many of these students have been diagnosed with a language based learning disability such as dyslexia and were either on an IEP in public school or eligible for one had they attended public school. We also have families who have adopted children from eastern Europe who struggle with English.
BCLS accepts approximately 80 students per year and employs 17 full time teachers. Students usually enroll around 3rd or 4th grade, once it is evident that they will not be successful in other schools. Class sizes are kept small so students get the individual attention and appropriate instruction they need for success.
We use Wilson Reading, a program based on Orton Gillingham methods which uses a multi-sensory, systematic approach to phonemic instruction, spelling, and reading comprehension. Handwriting is taught with Handwriting without Tears, a curriculum developed by an Occupational Therapist
Most of our operating budget comes from tuition payments augmented by the Georgia SB-10 scholarship program. This program allows students who have attended public school to seek alternative help from schools like ours. We would like to expand our programs without having to increase tuition, as many of our families are not wealthy and some are even financially strained.
