The Buddy Walk of South Plainfield-Serving Central New Jersey was created by Michele Both of South Plainfield in October 2004 when her son, Kyle Both, was born with Down syndrome. The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society to not only promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome but also to raise money for research and education programs. The program has expanded from just 17 walks to over 250 worldwide. Last year, over $13 million was raised worldwide for the Down syndrome community.

In 2016, donations for the walk will go towards three local support groups Central NJ DS PAG, Network 21 and Shane & Wyatt's Down Syndrome Foundation, as well as the National Down Syndrome Society and LuMind (formerly DSRTF.) Proceeds also go towards creating packets/gift baskets for new parents of children with Down syndrome.
