Each year over 2,000 people in Knox County receive a cancer diagnosis. We continue to focus on our mission to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. Cancer patients and their loved ones have united for over 32 years at the Rachael Young Center to benefit from programs offered at no charge. Under the guidance of trained professionals, participants have educated themselves and faced their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery in a compassionate, dignified, and supportive environment. Our programs are an integral part of the healing process and positively impact a cancer patients' ability to complete daily activities and manage their treatment.
Our goal is and has always been to decrease the stress of cancer and allow people with cancer to focus on their quality of life as well as their quantity of life. We endeavor to support those living with cancer from diagnosis to survivorship, or through end-of-life. Because of the improved therapies and treatments for cancer, many people with metastatic disease are living longer and require more psycho-social support than ever before. We strive to meet all the psycho-social needs of patients and families impacted by cancer. Objectives of CSCET programs:
- Educate people so they are knowledgeable about their disease and better able to navigate their treatment, side-effects, and recovery
- Provide tools and resources that enable individuals to take action in their overall health and healthcare decisions
- Teach a variety of stress management techniques so that participants experience a reduction in depression, anxiety, and/or fatigue, and are better able to focus on healing their body, mind and spirit
- Reduce feelings of isolation to help participants fight feelings of hopelessness that often accompany a cancer diagnosis
