Canine Classmates is a 501(c)3 program Literacy Intervention Program in Comal County. The organization works with pre-K through fifth-grade students to improve reading skills, increase confidence, and develop better study habits. For 30 minutes each week, these young students feel special studying with a trained Reading Dog and a Best Buddy (adult mentor) in a positive and safe environment. Students participating in the program gain confidence and become engaged in the classroom, leading to improved academic performance.
In addition, Canine Classmates partners with the Comal County Criminal District Attorney's Office by providing an on-call therapy dog to comfort young victims and witnesses as they prepare for court.
