The Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA) is in Grantville, PA. For 38 years, CATRA has offered the Capital Area of Pennsylvania a safe and nurturing environment to take part in therapeutic horseback riding and other animal-centered therapeutic activities.

CATRA’s Mission:  CATRA provides quality equine and animal assisted therapeutic programs to the people of the Capital Area.

CATRA is considered one of the foremost Equine assisted therapeutic riding facilities in the United States. CATRA’s founders, Ben and Shirley Nolt have been leaders in the field of equine and animal assisted therapy, mentoring other similar organizations. CATRA has also had an impact on the Educational Community by hosting and teaching University Students nationwide.

CATRA has a four-point approach to animal assisted therapeutic programs. The cornerstone program of CATRA is the Therapeutic Horseback Riding lessons. This program focuses on balance, and movement, while promoting confidence and problem solving. The Miniature Horse Extravaganza – pairs people of all ages with a miniature horse to learn horsemanship, develop confidence, and build social skills while participating in a physical activity. The Paws n’ Read Program provides a unique opportunity utilizing the innate curiosity of animals to help young readers improve their reading skills while reading to an animal. The Equine Psychotherapy & Equine Growth & Learning Program – Horses and humans work together to improve the quality of life and mental health of individuals, families, and groups.

Approximately, 120 lessons are given every week and riders range from 8 months to 95 years old. CATRA continues to ensure all people, of all ages from all walks of life with special needs are afforded the opportunity of animal assisted therapeutic activities regardless of their ability to pay.
