The Center for Human Development (CHD) provides a broad range of high-quality, community-oriented human services dedicated to promoting, enhancing, and protecting the dignity and welfare of people in need in the New England region.
In the 1960s, community services were hard to come by. People struggling with hunger, homelessness, or simple healthcare needs easily got lost in the system. Believing there had to be a better way, three young activists — Bill Seretta, Kathy Townsend, and Art Bertrand — founded CHD. Instead of sending people away for help, they brought life-saving services into homes, schools, workplaces, and community centers. This simple change was a revolution.
Today, community-based care is the heart and soul of our mission. Today, CHD offers over 80 programs throughout both Massachusetts and Connecticut and is seeking donations to help support our programs, which help over 30,000 people every year from foster children; adults struggling with addiction and mental health; men, women, and their families seeking comfort during cancer treatment; people with intellectual and physical disabilities; and families needing food and shelter. CHD’s only motivation is helping people create successful lives.
All of our relationships are rooted in respect – for our clients, the communities we serve, our colleagues, our donors, and for each and every life we touch. Many of our programs and services rely on the generosity of volunteers and donors who care deeply about the health of our community.
