The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support to empower them to stay in school and achieve in life. As a site coordinator I’m charged with mobilizing the community’s resources we serve and or live in to address academic and non-academic barriers. CIS work with students who have been identified as high needs and or at risk based on academics, behavior and attendance. Working outside of school, our staff helps address what schools often cannot which is basic needs, mental health and advocacy. The students we worked with last year(21-22): 76% are living in poverty, 36% have limited English proficiency, 23% failed statewide benchmark tests, 14% failed core level courses in the previous year, and 261 are homeless.

To make all this possible we are In partnership with local school districts, we provide daily school-based interventions to students in grades K–12 to address academic failure, truancy, behavioral issues, social service needs and more. Currently I’m serving in the Terrell ISD district at the high school which I have a standing caseload of 100 students but not limited to serving the whole student body. More than half the students and families do not have the means and or resources to explore outside of the city limits. Through strong networking and support I’m about to connect these students who is deemed at risk with community and non-community resources such as food, housing, school supplies, health care and emotional support to achieve and stay in school.
