There are more than 3,000 students experiencing homelesness and housing insecurity enrolled in Bay Area schools and they are twice as likely to score poorly on standardized tests and four times as likely to drop out of school. Yet, we know that the lack of a high school diploma or the equivalent is the number one risk factor for young adult homelessness, increasing the likelihood of homelessness by 346%. (Morton, Dworsky, & Samuels, 2017). Since 2010, Community Education Partnerships (CEP) has worked to support the learning and educational attainment of students experiencing homelessness and housing instability in the Bay Area. We do this by providing one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, backpacks, school supplies, books, and shelter-based Homework Clubs, Computer Clubs, and Reading Clubs. We also run a Children’s Learning Center, which is open five days per week at a shelter in Oakland.
