Imagine a world without the Civil Rights Acts, the Women’s Right to Vote Amendment, or the Americans with Disabilities Act. These movements made great strides towards social justice in our society.
Community Shares celebrate these achievements, while also recognizing the great need for more work. Imagine a life without….
· Protection from violence, torture, and abuse–
o over 6500 children were in Tennessee state custody for child abuse and neglect
· freedom from poverty
o nearly 18% of Tennesseans are living below the poverty level.
· clean air and water–
o 40% of Tennessee streams are not fit for human recreation
Community Shares’ member groups work to solve these and many other problems affecting Tennessee today. They aren’t just putting band aids on problems; they offer treatment and prevention of problems we all face.
In the past few years we have made great strides:
· For the environment: planting over 30,000 trees, reduced dependency on coal over 20%, and empowered communities to win new water treatment plants after discovering their water was unsafe to drink.
· for ending domestic violence: added $250,000 to state budget for shelters.
· for animals: provided homes and low cost spay and neuter surgeries for thousands of animals as part of work to make east TN no kill by 2025
· for ending homelessness: added hundreds of thousands of dollars for homeless services
· for the arts: educated nearly 100,000 Tennesseans about traditional art and music.
· for mental health: restored millions of dollars to Peer Support Centers which help 3,500 Tennesseans a day with mental health issues
The challenges we all face are complex, daunting, and deeply embedded in an unjust, corrupt, and discriminatory system. How can we overcome these problems together? We all have the freedom and the power to create change and your business can help create a just and caring community.
Community Shares member groups work on many different issues –but we share a common goal: to improve the quality of life for everyone in Tennessee.
Please join us on Saturday, April 26 from 6-10 pm at Bearden Banquet Hall to celebrate the change makers, activism, and our wonderful member groups, fighting for these important issues in our own backyard. This event also features a delicious meal, live musical entertainment, silent and live auctions, and a wine and beer bar.
