The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY is one of only a handful of public graduate journalism schools in the country. We are, however, easily among the most diverse—two-thirds of our students hail from diverse backgrounds and mirror the diversity of New York City. We stand proud of our contributions to diversifying the news industry and recentering public service as the foremost mission of journalism.

As part of CUNY, the largest engine of social mobility and civic engagement in the city, we focus on removing the financial and other barriers to a high-quality journalism education for students from all over the country. In fact, we announced that a generous gift combined with the philanthropic scholarship support we already receive will enable us to begin offering free tuition to 50% of our students the following year. We also launched a campaign to offer free tuition to our entire student body in perpetuity.

Our media centers provide research, training, thought leadership, and financial support for journalists and journalism. Since it was launched in 2015, J+ has trained thousands of professionals of all career levels in topics including leadership, business, product, and digital skills to drive change in their industry. In 2023, we launched the Journalism Protection Initiative, which, led by press freedom expert Joel Simon, sets a new standard for journalist safety. The Center for Community Media, which supports news outlets covering immigrants and communities of color, launched the Advertising Boost Initiative that in just three years helped infuse more than $40 million of New York City funds into community media.

The Newmark J-School routinely hosts events in which we foster thought-provoking, intelligent, inspirational discussions among industry leaders and experts in policy, politics, the arts, academia, and, of course, journalism. Each event revolves around an urgent issue of the moment—immigration, trust, polarization, safety, elections, democracy, war—and the role of journalism within it. The purpose of these events is to position the Newmark J-School as the center of critical thinking, thought leadership, and genuine insight and knowledge.
